SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — An alleged attempt to avoid a deputy checkpoint ended with more than one charge for a Sumter County man.

Sumter County deputies were conducting a checkpoint at North St. Pauls Church Road and China Lane Monday when they noticed 26-year-old Travon Antonio Williams.

Before reaching the checkpoint, Williams reportedly pulled into a yard, turned around, then drove off in the opposite directions.

A deputy tried to pull Williams' over, but he didn't stop, and a high-speed chase ensued. He didn't stop until he arrived at a residence on Crowndale Drive — even after two of his tires were flattened by stop sticks on Loring Mill Road.

After Williams was arrested, deputies searched his car. That's when they found a child, along with suspected marijuana. Deputies say they didn't see the child during the chase.

Williams was charged with child endangerment and failure to stop for a blue light and booked at the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center.
