CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — A man who reportedly shot a DC firefighter to death after an alleged domestic assault is now facing charges.
The shooting happened in the 2900 block of Sedgemore Place in Bryan's Road on May 8.
According to the Charles County Sheriff's Office, officers were called to the area for a reported domestic dispute and the sound of gunshots shortly before 3:30 a.m. When they arrived, they found 30-year-old Carl Braxton. He had been shot.
Braxton was taken to an area hospital where he later died.
In May, police reported that Braxton assaulted his girlfriend inside their townhouse shortly before the shooting. They added that the woman was able to get away and sought help from a man who was walking his dog.
Witnesses reportedly told police they saw Braxton walk up to the man and threaten him.
The man has since been identified as 37-year-old Carlos Lavanto Garner.
Police said in May that Garner shot and killed Braxton as the firefighter continued to "walk aggressively" toward him.
Months later, police arrested Garner on multiple charges, including second-degree murder, manslaughter, and felony use of a firearm for his alleged involvement in the shooting.
