Man drowns in Northeast Richland County pond

Officials say the 57-year-old went under the water while trying to get his boat to the shore.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A Columbia man drowned in a Richland County pond Saturday.

David C. Green, 57, drowned in a pond near Bookman Loop and Monticello Road in northeast Richland County around 8 p.m. Saturday, according to Richland County coroner Gary Watts.

Officials say Green went under the water while trying to get his boat to the shore. He was found by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department Underwater Recovery Unit in approximately 5 feet of water. The Columbia Richland Fire Department also assisted in the recovery.

Green was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy indicated the cause of death was Asphyxiation due to drowning in a pond, according to coroner Watts.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department continue to investigate the incident.
