CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The Medical University of South Carolina board has agreed to buy four hospitals in the state.

News outlets reported the board voted unanimously Monday night after discussing the idea in a closed meeting.

It will be the first time the medical university has purchased other hospitals. The price has not been disclosed. The State Fiscal Accountability Authority would have to approve the financing.

The deal involves four hospitals owned by Community Health Systems. The hospitals to be purchased include Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster. Chester Regional Medical Center, and Carolinas Hospital System hospitals in Mullins and Florence.

State health officials say the four hospitals have 715 beds. MUSC has 713 beds.

MUSC president Dr. David Cole says the purchase is part of the emerging MUSC Health Network.
