Cayce hosts first community 'Save a Life Day'

It's part of funding the city received from the state opioid recovery fund.

CAYCE, S.C. — Cayce held its first Save a Life Day on Saturday to provide resources, fun, and information about life-saving interventions. The community also met the city's first community risk reduction manager.

"CRR manager, which is for Cayce Fire Department, and CRR is Community Risk Reduction," Lindsay McDade said.

Lindsay McDade is the first to take on the role and to put on the first Cayce Save a Life Day at Granby Park.

"This event accomplishes a lot of goals into one number it's a substance-free event number two we're doing a prescription drug take back and we're also teaching about Narcan," she said.

The South Carolina Opioid Recovery Fund (SCORF) funds the role. The fund was created to help address the impact of the opioid epidemic in South Carolina, the goal of the Save a Life event, according to McDade.

"It's a creative way to kind of address the opioid crisis in the area. It's affected all areas," McDade said.

Pam Imm with the Courage Center says events like these are necessary, especially in Lexington.

"While there's many good things going on in Lexington, we are not immune the problems with alcohol and drugs use and even opioid use disorder. We know that fentanyl is here fentanyl is in counterfeit pills," Imm said.

Community members said they'd like to see more events like this to lend a hand in the fight against addiction.

"It just brings the community together and everybody can hang out and kind of like a fellowship together in a way," Tiffany Hendrix said.

Community members learned CPR from the Red Cross and Cayce Police Department. In addition to those lessons, the event provided free food, a clothing drive, Narcan, and addiction resources.
