COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Columbia Economic Development Committee is discussing new efforts to beautify the city. Part of this plan includes new signage throughout Columbia.

There are many things people love about Columbia's beauty. Eli Velez, who has lived in the city for five years, said that beauty partly drew her here.

"Columbia, there's a lot of industries in Columbia," she said. "They're diverse. There's a lot of jobs, openings, there's a lot of attraction."

Hailey Johnson has lived here her entire life and said art makes the city beautiful.

"I also love that they give everyone the opportunity to show their talents, such as the murals downtown; I love those," Johnson said.

According to Councilman Peter Brown, these things speak to Columbia's mission.

"Something's really important to all of us is messaging, you know? Who Columbia is and, you know, kind of where we're going, but also kind of looking at ways that we can develop pride in our city," Brown said.

The city plans to continue those efforts and add to the list of things people love in Columbia. The economic development and infrastructure committee has discussed adding new signs in the city after a successful wayfinding project for landmarks throughout Columbia.

"I think the previous project of wayfinding signs and Columbia was a great success. I think they look great. They're better looking than any wayfinding signs that I've seen as I travel around," he said. "So, I think we're kind of tying into that as well. And really it's just ... a way to kind of show off Columbia. And I think, you know, the vibe in Columbia is real. And I think the progress in Columbia is real. And we want to kind of show off a little bit."

This proposal is in its beginning stages and will be further discussed in future meetings.
