COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - They keep kids safe each day going to and coming from school, and now the state Department of Transportation has set aside a week to thank them.
South Carolina's first Crossing Guard Appreciation Week begins Monday.
The department is encouraging schools and communities to recognize crossing guards and the job they do in keeping students safe. During the week, outstanding crossing guards nominated by schools and communities will be recognized.
The department's Safe Routes to School Resource Center provides materials, services, and planning help in encouraging more students to walk and ride bicycles to schools. The center also has programs that teach bicycle and pedestrian safety.
