ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina State University has told state officials it needs $17 million to deal with its financial problems.
The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported Wednesday (http://bit.ly/1cZo8qk) that school President Thomas Elzey told the Budget and Control Board the university has a budget deficit of more than $4 million.
The newspaper says Elzey also told officials the school has a $13 million cash flow shortage and will not be able to pay its bills by March.
The president says payments to utilities, vendors and contractors will be delayed, but the university will meet its payroll through June.
The newspaper says Elzey talked with the board at a special meeting last week after the board asked the school for a plan to deal with its deficit.
