COLUMBIA, S.C. — If you were wondering why a large military vehicle was on the side of Interstate 77 near Columbia this week, there's an answer.
People called News19 Thursday morning to say they saw the tank-like vehicle on the side of the highway near Exit 2 on top of a flatbed trailer.
News19 contacted the South Carolina National Guard, who said the vehicle was an M88 Heavy Equipment Recovery Combat Utility Lift Evacuation system that belonged to them. The vehicle is designed to recover disabled tanks.
The civilian contractor left it there due to mechanical issues the contractor was having. The National Guard said the vehicle was finally delivered to them Friday.
