Sumter, SC (WLTX)- Investigators say additional arrests are possible in a dispute between two Sumter families that turned into an all out brawl Sunday night.
Deputies say a feud between two Sumter County families has been going on for over a year, those families are the Gainey's and the Henderson's.
"This feud has been going on for sometime between these two families. At one point in time these two families had a restraining order against each other but those restraining orders have expired," said Bunch.
Sunday night the fight ended with a member of the Gainey family hospitalized in critical condition.
41-year-old Donnie Gainey was dragged by a truck during the altercation and had to be airlifted to a hospital in Columbia.
This all started when Joshua and Joseph Henderson were leaving the Food Lion on Highway 15.
According to an incident report, once inside their truck the Henderson siblings saw Crystal Gainey; Donnie Gainey's wife, parked behind them in a car.
Mrs. Gainey allegedly got out of her vehicle and tried to spray the Henderson's with mace.
The report says when the Henderson's left the parking lot, they called 911 and they also called their father asking that he meet them at a Young's food store a few miles away.
Once they got to that store, the police report says Mrs. Gainey parked behind them again and was approached by Joseph Henderson Sr., the siblings' father.
At some point, investigators say she sprayed Henderson in the face with mace and then he punched her in the face.
Gainey's husband Donnie arrived at the scene and got in the middle of things.
During the fight, the incident report say Mrs. Gainey approached Joseph Henderson Sr. and began firing a gun in his direction.
The report says the Henderson's then pushed Donnie Gainey to the ground and tried to leave the scene. When they did, their vehicle struck and ran over Gainey and dragged him 30 yards.
He was airlifted to a Columbia hospital where he's in critical condition.
Joseph Henderson Jr. was arrested and charged with attempted murder and his father Joseph Sr. was charged with simple assault
Braden Bunch with the Sumter County Sheriff's Department says that Crystal Gainey was not charged.
"The frustrating this is when families get involved in situations like this it makes things very volatile and emotional and folks want to defend their family. But what we can't have is this escalating to more and more people who might not have been involved in the initial incident are becoming involved simply to further the issue," said Bunch.
Investigators say there were other family members involved and a friend of the Gainey's. They are still trying to determine exactly what happened.
