Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles will soon begin phasing in a new series of license plates that will have a much more basic design that what you currently see out on the road.
The agency says they'll start issuing the redesigned plates beginning on May 1st of this year, to comply with a new law that was passed. The process will begin with the specialty license plates, such as the ones that highlight a particular college or are for veterans.
The DMV says certain specialty license plates with vehicle registration dates before May 1st will receive the current plate. However, if the vehicle registration is processed after May 1st, those persons will receive the new plate.
The DMV says the new plates were designed in conjunction with law enforcement to provide maximum visibility. The specialty plate is white with a blue line at the top above the name of the plate. A red line is below the name of the plate, and the emblem is on the left-hand side.
The agency says they will post more information about the new plates here: www.scdmvonline.com
