COLUMBIA, S.C. — Five Points will soon be home to the timeless sound of a New Brookland Tavern concert.
The venue's talent buyer, Carlin Thompson ,says in August they found out their current building was being sold, and decided it would be time for them to change venues.
"We took a couple looks at like the Moosehead Saloon in Five Points, a couple of areas in the Vista," Thompson said. "The Cotton Gin was the one location that kinda felt like it could be the New Brookland Tavern in some way."
Thompson said the business will be taking over the space at The Cotton Gin on Harden Street in December.
"The younger kids are more likely to wander into a business to check out who's playing, whether there's a cover charge or no cover charge. Five points has triple the amount of walk-through traffic that this strip on State Street has."
In a Tweet posted Friday, The Cotton Gin said:
"We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us. Whether you were a regular customer or you followed our journey with Gamecock recruiting we appreciate you! The spirit behind that is not going away. Go Cocks #BeatMissouri"
David Toole is the owner of the Bluetile Skate Shop across the street from The Cotton Gin. As a fan of the New Brookland Tavern, he says the move could be a big benefit for his business.
"It's really cool because like-minded businesses are opening downtown, or in five points, near us," Toole said. "I think we will share a lot of the same clientele."
Toole says Five Points has changed a lot over the years, and he is excited to see some of the old-school five points fun back in town.
"It seemed to be a little more funky, a little more youth-driven when I was younger and I feel like some of that is coming back."
