CAYCE, S.C. — If you venture down under the Blossom Street bridge, you're going to be pleasantly surprised.
A large painted mural full of color is coming to life.
Joel Cothran is the artist, a local to the Lexington County area, he grew up in West Columbia.
He says he dedicated this artwork to his grandparents who lived near the river and would take him to the Riverbank botanical garden growing up.
"I've always, since I was young, just liked to draw. And it was a way to kill time. I guess I didn't have a TV for a long time, like till I was in high school," Cothran said.
Cothran explains he's spent six to seven hours a day out here painting, some days, ten hours.
"First I had to pressure wash it, and then I had to put primer on it and the third step is to draw it and so I used a grid method," Cothran said.
This is his third week working on the mural and he explains he hopes it'll be finished soon.
The Cayce Beautification Foundation funded the creation of this beautiful masterpiece through fundraisers like the Brickworks dinner and the Cayce adult spelling bee.
Colleen Bradley is the group's president.
"The hope is for everyone to come out here and find something about it that they just fall in love with. There's something for everyone: Kids, adults. It doesn't matter if you see it one time or twenty times. There's something that's going to catch your attention and draw your eyes to it every single time that you look at it. So hopefully it's something that draws more people to our beautiful river walk and draws more people to Cayce in general," Bradley said.
