Columbia, SC - (WLTX) The River Alliance has been working to create more public access between the rivers in Columbia, Cayce and West Columbia.
The idea has been around for nearly two decades and soon visitors will have more winding paths to walk through.
Construction crews are working to build bridges that will connect to pathways for people to enjoy the scenic nature of the river.
River Alliance Executive Director Mike Dawson says, "It's going to go all the way down the Saluda River around the middle race rapids. Go around the Riverbank Zoo and it will come back and stop right at the Broad river."
Dawson explains what it will look like by saying, "We will build these timber bridges so that the whole surface is bicycle, wheel chair accessible, and roller blade friendly and then it will come back and then connect to the concrete path."
But the bridges will not only connect pathways but will connect people and for Mike Dawson he feels that will be one of his greatest accomplishments.
He says, "Well the most exciting part of the day for me is when were going to have any stretch of this green way filled lots and lots of people enjoying the river. Once it (the river) becomes a part of your daily life you become passionate about that resource and it's here for everybody."
The pathways are slated for completion in September.
