COLUMBIA, S.C. — The world of artificial intelligence (AI) and how it integrates into almost every facet of your life is everchanging. In an attempt to understand and protect residents of South Carolina, House Speaker Murrell Smith has announced the formation of a new House Committee that will study AI and related areas of cybercrime and cybersecurity and "develop strategies to safeguard the rights and interests of South Carolina citizens."
Smith says, “In a world where AI technology is advancing at a rapid pace, it is imperative that we comprehensively explore the impact that such rapidly evolving technologies will have on our state’s citizens. Only through careful examination and understanding can we ensure that these innovations are harnessed for the betterment of society, safeguarding the rights and well-being of South Carolina’s citizens first and foremost.”
The South Carolina committee will be the first-in-the-nation standing committee of its kind. Speaker Smith intends to ask the full House to vote to make this committee a permanent part of the House structure beginning after the General Assembly organizes near the end of 2024.
