Local nonprofit hosts Three Kings Day festival

The festival is for the whole family and will be offering face painting sessions music. food and even a special appearance from Abraham the camel.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — For some, the holiday season is still in full swing. Christians celebrate the Epiphany on Jan. 6.

The Latino Community Development is partnering with the Richland County Government to host Saturday's 11th Annual Three Kings Day festival.

"It's all about diversity, inclusivity, cultural experiences, and, of course, nothing more important than ending the Christmas season with this celebration that we do very much celebrate throughout Latin America and the Caribbean," Tanya Rodriguez-Hodges, Executive Director at Latino Community Development.

Three Kings Day, or Día de los Reyes, is celebrated on Jan. 6 every year, marking the 12th day of Christmas.

"Tomorrow is so special to us because we see the kids that aren't exposed to this day that say I still get gifts, and there's still fun to be had," Rodriguez-Hodges said.

Although the birth of Jesus is celebrated on Dec. 25, this holiday commemorates the three kings or, as many know them, the wise men who didn't reach him until 12 days later.

Lydia Carnesale and her family have attended for years.

"To all be there for a common event is really fun, but for our kids to really see how we can celebrate traditional and cultural aspects of who we are and experience that is good," Carnesale said.

The festival is for the whole family and will offer face painting sessions, music. food, and even a special appearance from Abraham, the camel.

Richland County officials said they are excited to be part of this community event.

"It helps us appreciate each other and just making sure that we support each other because we live here together. this is our home, and we're all in this together," Richland County Councilperson Cheryl English said.

The free event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2500 Decker Blvd. on Saturday.
