Grandparents raise funds to bring home body of Tybee Island drowning victim from Atlanta

It happened on Friday; Georgia game wardens were called regarding a drowning involving three people around 11:45 a.m.

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. — Grandparents of a 16-year-old who drowned on Tybee Island during the Fourth of July weekend have started an online fundraiser to help get his body home and burial costs. 

According to the fundraiser, Laquvis McCray from Atlanta was on a trip to Savannah with friends to visit their family when he was pulled under the water with two others. 

"Laquavis was a fun-loving teenager who kept us laughing with his jokes and liked to impress people with his dance moves," his grandmother, Nina White, said in the fundraiser.

It happened on Friday, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said around 11:45 a.m. Wardens reported that two people were pulled to safety, but McCray did not come up.

A boat search was initiated by wardens along with Chatham Marine Patrol and Tybee Marine Squadron. Around 3:30 p.m., the Chatham County Dive Team recovered McCray's body. 

"His unexpected passing has put his mom in a difficult position both emotionally and financially," the fundraiser reads.
