Deputies train and mentor over summer to ensure student safety

SROs are vital in creating a safe environment for students and staff. They're also dedicated to fostering positive relationships within the school community.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — During the summer, school resource officers (SROs) like deputies Kalema Grant and Alex Hartsell dedicate their time to rigorous training to ensure students’ safety and well-being throughout the school year.

"That's why we train," said Deputy Grant. "We have our two-day SRO-based training, departmental training, and a meeting before we go into schools to cover legal updates and expectations."

They also spend the summer working on ongoing investigations, going out on patrol, and spending time with kids at the Richland County Sheriff's Department's summer camps.

Beyond their law enforcement duties, SROs also play a pivotal role in shaping students' mental and emotional well-being. "We have the triad concept," said Deputy Hartsell.

This approach means they serve as law enforcement officers as well as counselors and mentors.

"We have opportunities to mentor youth and teach them about financial education, leadership, and other important life skills," he said.

Deputy Grant emphasized the importance of building trust with students.

"When you get to know these young people and interact with them, they understand that correction comes from a place of love," she said.

Both deputies shared personal anecdotes about their efforts to support students in need, from providing essential supplies to mentoring students using their life experiences.

Despite the challenges, such as realizing they can't save every child or dealing with traumatic incidents, the rewards of the job are significant.

Deputy Grant described the joy of seeing students grow and succeed.

"Watching them walk across the stage and knowing you were part of their journey is the rewarding part," Deputy Hartsell said. "Building relationships with students as well as their families because we get close;  it's almost like one big family."

The deputies said they also work closely with principals and administrators to help better serve the students.

Through their dedication and multifaceted roles, SROs like Deputies Grant and Hartsell are essential in creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for students to thrive.

Deputy Grant will return to Westwood High School for the upcoming school year.

Deputy Hartsell will work with the Lower Richland High School students and staff.
