Orangeburg man arrested after remains found under Myrtle Beach backyard firepit

An Orangeburg man was arrested for murder after police found the remains of Penni Whiteside under a firepit in a Myrtle Beach backyard.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — An Orangeburg man has been arrested after remains were found under a backyard firepit in Horry County.

Sheridan Dirk Fogle, 54, of Orangeburg, is charged with the murder of Penni Whiteside in Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach police say Whiteside was originally reported missing on May 11, 2022.

According to a police report, Whiteside lived with Fogle in the 600 block of 1st Avenue South. After speaking with neighbors, police said there was reason to believe that she may have been buried near the home, in the backyard, under a firepit. 

On June 12, 2024, investigators obtained a search warrant for the property. During the search, police say the Whiteside's remains were recovered and identified.

According to police, Fogle was arrested on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024, around 7:30 a.m. on Broughton Street in Orangeburg. 

"This is a tragic loss of life and a senseless crime of violence," Myrtle Beach police said in a statement on Facebook.
