Sumter, SC (WLTX) - Sumter police are accusing a man and a woman of mistreating two dogs that they were supposed to be caring for.

Monica Denise Daniels, 30, and Patrick James Simon, 22 are both charged with ill treatment of animals.

According to police, a deputy with the Sumter Sheriff's Office went to serve an eviction warrant at a home on Carolina Avenue on January 25 when they found a severely malnourished dog. Officers say the boxer-bull mix was eating the remains of another dog.

Officers determined the animals were not given shelter or water.

At first, police say Daniels and Simon denied owning the dogs, but Sumter police say the two were responsible for the dogs' care.

The surviving dog, nicknamed "Sugar," is two years old. Offices say she's in good condition, and will be available for adoption once her treatment is complete. Anyone interested in adopting her can call Sumter Animal Control at 803.773.2833.
