CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Police have charged a 25-year-old North Charleston man with homicide by child abuse in the death of a 3-year-old boy over the weekend after they say he hit the child with his fist and ruptured his spleen.

Area media outlets report that Curtis Tyrone Williams was denied bond during a hearing on Tuesday. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office reported that 3-year-old Kamari McKithen died late Sunday afternoon. Police say the boy was the son of Williams' girlfriend.

Police allege that Williams hit the child in the side with his fist.

Court documents say that the child died of blunt force trauma that caused his spleen to rupture.
