Columbia, SC (WLTX) — A potential tropical system is in the Gulf of Mexico, and while it won't strike South Carolina, it could bring heavy rain to the state by the end of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Currently the National Hurricane Center is actively monitoring the broad, near stationary surface low centered over the Yucatan Peninsula.
Gradual development of this potential tropical complex is expected during the next couple of days. There is a 40 percent chance of tropical formation over the next 48 hours and 90 percent through 5 days from today. Environmental conditions are forecast to become more favorable for development through early next week as a subtropical or tropical.
Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is forecast across western Cuba and over much of Florida and the northern Gulf Coast into early next week. There is a potential for at least one or two days of locally heavy rainfall not just for The Midlands but much of South Carolina, beginning Sunday night into Memorial Day Monday.
