Richland County deputy arrested for DUI, fired after 11 months on the job

Michael Kennedy, 34, was arrested for DUI on July 11 by the West Columbia Police Department, according to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A now-former Richland County deputy was arrested on Thursday for allegedly driving under the influence.

Michael Kennedy, 34, was charged with DUI on July 11 by the West Columbia Police Department, according to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott

According to Lott, Kennedy was immediately suspended without pay and is no longer employed with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. 

Kennedy had been with the sheriff’s department since August 2023. 

“We are all responsible for the decisions we make and therefore the consequences that come from those decisions,” Lott said. “My deputies know if they violate the law they will be held accountable.”
