Richland County deputy hospitalized after car crash Tuesday morning

The incident happened on Shop Road and Atlas Road.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Richland County deputy has been hospitalized following a crash between the deputy's vehicle and a pickup truck.

The sheriff's department said the incident happened around 8:30 a.m. while the deputy was responding to an emergency call for service while his lights and siren were on. According to the sheriff's department, when the deputy got to the intersection of Shop Road and Atlas Road he attempted to drive through the area but was hit on the passenger side by the truck.

Images from the scene show heavy damage to the deputy's vehicle and that his air bags had deployed. The pickup had damage to the front of the vehicle.

The sheriff's department said the deputy was taken to a local hospital for treatment while the other driver appeared to be okay and remained at the scene. 

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collision. News19 has reached out to them for comment and additional details.
