RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Richland County Councilmembers have approved the creation of a public-private economic development partnership.
The county said the goal of the new deal, known as "P3," is to entice more private businesses to the area and secure quality job opportunities for residents.
“This vote for P3 is our continued commitment to Richland county residents to focus on economic development and making sure jobs are here," said Jesica Mackey, Richland County Councilwoman.
Mackey explained that once the partnership launches, the county will appoint board members, then P3 will meet with local officials to come up with solutions to community needs.
The transition of the county’s economic development functions to a P3 will allow Richland County to compete more effectively in the high-stakes battle to attract and retain quality job opportunities.
One specific target is the tech industry that the county wants to further invest in.
“We really want to start understanding how we work with entrepreneurs with education with higher-ed and K-12 to really start making tech more of a reality here in Richland County for jobs and sustainability growth," Mackey added.
With the creation of this new partnership, Richland County will join a number of successful communities with similar structures--such as Greenville--and leaders are hopeful that this will boost economic development for the county.
The county plans to officially launch the P3 in 2025, with full operation planned by mid-year.
