The deputy was directing traffic after an accident and was struck by a passing car.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Richland County Sheriff Deputy was struck by a car while helping to direct traffic on Tuesday evening.

According to Sheriff Leon Lott the incident happened around 8PM on Caughman Road and Benson Road, where the deputy was responding to a car accident.

The deputy was directing traffic around the accident when he was struck by a passing car.   The department has not released the name of the deputy.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified and South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

SCHP will be conducting the investigation.

"Thankfully, our deputy will be okay. We are lucky that his injuries are not more serious. This is an important reminder of the dangers our deputies face on a day-to-day basis. You can save one of our deputies' lives by simply slowing down and being careful," Sheriff Leon Lott.
