COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County deputies say a student a Richland Northeast High brought a loaded gun to school.
Officers say the 17-year-old male took the weapon to the campus Tuesday morning. Officers say the student passed through a metal detector, one of several that are randomly set up throughout the district. The detector alerted staff that he may have a weapon and the student was detained and searched.
Officers said they found the loaded gun in his backpack. A picture released by the sheriff's department appeared to show a 9mm pistol.
According to deputies, the male student was charged with bringing a weapon on school property, unlawful carry of a weapon, and possession of a pistol under 18.
He was booked into the juvenile wing of the Richland County Detention Center.
