COLUMBIA, S.C. — Rockaway Athletic Club, the iconic restaurant spot in Columbia's Rosewood Community known for its burgers, is now closed.
A sign was posted on the business' door Thursday that simply said "closed," and all the doors were locked. On the restaurant's Facebook page, the business said Thursday they had originally planned to shut down on Sunday, but changed plans suddenly.
"Wow Columbia! " the ownership wrote. "We are so grateful for you! For over 40 years, we have had the pleasure serving you, and now we look forward to being on the other side of a bar! Originally, we planned to stay open til January 21st, but so many people came out to show their support that we ran out of food and supplies last night and are unable to continue."
On Wednesday afternoon, real estate company Cason Development Group confirmed that the property had been sold and closed on. The company later said in a social media post that they're hoping to make some improvements to the exterior of the building.
"[We] are hoping to resurrect either that business or something very similar to it," the restaurant wrote. "We are working with a local group and want it to be something that meets the needs of the two neighborhoods on either side of it, Rosewood and Shandon."
Employees at the restaurant said Wednesday that current employees wouldn't be retained.
Rockway is known for its burgers - particularly its pimento cheese burger - and as a spot for drinks. It has been around for about 40 years. It's known for its plain brick exterior that does not include a sign.
Rockaway burned down 22 years ago but was rebuilt.
