Travel and boating safety in spotlight ahead of July 4th: Where you can get a boat inspection

SCDNR and the SC Highway Patrol are aiming for zero BUI and DUI incidents this holiday week through increased presence and public awareness.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — As the July 4th holiday approaches, authorities and safety officials are intensifying efforts to ensure safety amidst increased travel and boating activities.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Law Enforcement Division is ramping up patrols to monitor boating safety. Joseph Santiago, a game warden with SCDNR, emphasized their focus on Operation Dry Water, an initiative aimed at preventing boating under the influence (BUI) incidents.

"We are implementing Operation Dry Water to monitor our waterways and reduce accidents related to boating under the influence," said Santiago.

Operation Dry Water is a year-round campaign, heightened during periods of increased boating activity, to enforce BUI laws. Santiago highlighted the misconception about alcohol limits on the water versus on the road, noting the legal limit of .08 applies equally in both environments.

In addition, South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper David Jones stressed the need for responsible driving on roads during the holidays, citing past incidents involving poor decisions like speeding and driving under the influence.

"We need the public's help to combat these issues. If you're going out this holiday, get a sober driver, limit distractions, buckle up, and slow down," Jones advised.

Law enforcement also cautioned about safety after fireworks displays, particularly on the water where there are no traffic signs.

"Boats are everywhere on the water. There are no stop signs or speed limits, so it's crucial to be informed before heading out," Santiago added.

During the Fourth of July holiday, SCDNR will also be conducting courtesy boat inspections at public landings statewide to ensure boats comply with safety regulations. You can find where courtesy boat inspections are taking place here.
