COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland District One was one of several districts in the Midlands to close as a result of Wednesday's rally at the Statehouse. But the district still opened its doors at several schools for students and parents.
Kids were able to go to Carver-Lyon Elementary School and get the exact same lunch they would have received had school not been cancelled.
Laquanday Stephenson is a mother of two and says the school being open was not only a way for her children to eat, but also a way for them to get out of the house.
"It's a good thing it give them something to do instead of staying home, a lot of kids don't eat so it's a good thing for the community." Stephenson said.
Stephenson also says she supports the teachers and feel they should have more benefits.
"My son loves his teacher and she really do a lot for him so I feel like she deserves more, they're teaching our future." Stephenson said.
About a dozen kids were fed at the school on Wednesday. After they ate, staff members at the school gave out free books and read stories to the kids.
