COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Transportation is getting ready for the potentially hazardous conditions that could be caused by Tropical Storm Debby.
The storm is expected to bring heavy rain for several days beginning Tuesday. Some computer models are showing rainfall projections of 10 inches are higher, with potentially devastating flooding along the coastal region.
In response, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster issued a state of emergency Sunday for the entire state. That designation allows the state to prepare for emergencies.
One of the key agencies in the response will be the South Carolina Department of Transportation, since flooding will create major road hazards. The agency said the rainfall could cause flash flooding or ponding on roadways. The agency urges the public never to drive through standing water.
SCDOT said crews have worked throughout the weekend, particularly in coastal areas, to clear storm drains. The agency is also preparing supplies and staging equipment.
