UPDATE: A spokesperson for Congaree National Park corrected previous information provided by the Richland County Sheriff's Department. The vehicle in question was found in a parking lot for the Wateree Passage of the Palmetto Trail, which is near the park but well outside its boundaries.
RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. -- The Richland County Sheriff's Department is looking for a man who was last seen days earlier and was reported missing by his family.
The sheriff's department said 28-year-old Zelig Williams was last seen at his home in the 400 block of Longwood Road in Columbia on Oct. 3.
Deputies said a family member contacted them the next day and said they had not heard or seen him. They were concerned since going without contacting anyone is unlike Williams. Investigators said Williams needs prescription medication.
Further investigation suggested he may have been driving in the area of Congaree National Park. A park spokesperson later clarified details released by the sheriff's department regarding where the vehicle was found. According to the spokesperson, the vehicle was found in the parking lot of the Wateree Passage of the Palmetto Trail at the intersection of U.S. 601 and Bluff Road, which is about a mile north of the closest portion of the park and not on its grounds.
Park authorities said there was no active search for Williams in the park.
The sheriff's department asked anyone with information on Williams to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
