'It's freezing' | Vendors and shoppers make their way out to Soda City Market on Saturday despite cold temps

Despite freezing temperatures, the Soda City Market still set up shop in downtown Columbia this weekend.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — This Saturday, the lows across the Midlands included temperatures down in the teens and below freezing in Columbia.

Despite the cold weather, some folks decided to brave the cold early Saturday morning for the tradition of Soda City Market.

"I packed two blankets, three towels to keep me warm, and then like three extra jackets, so I have layers on," said vendor Christine Martinez.

Martinez of Christine's Petite Sweets said that as a local business, she needed to be out at Soda City Market in her tent despite being cold.

"Ultimately, our goal is to make sales and grow our businesses. Right now, I'm in six locations. I'm looking to be in other locations to sell my products to, but I also sell at Soda City," Martinez said.

The market takes place every weekend, rain or shine, and even in freezing weather. However, Carolina Cookin's food truck owner, John Reynolds, said the crowds on Saturday were small compared to a typical weekend.

Reynolds said that although the cold is uncomfortable, his truck is ready for anything.

"We do outdoor events all the time, so I'm always checking the weather. I knew it was going to be cold last night, and I knew it would be a slow start," the food truck owner said.

Soda City Market takes place every Saturday along Main Street (starting at the intersection of Main and Blanding to the intersection of Gervais and Main) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Next weekend is supposed to be much warmer than the 30 degrees seen Saturday, with temperatures forecasted to be in the 60s.
