What to know before you go vote today in the South Carolina primary

Here's what you need to know before you head out to vote in the South Carolina Primary on June 11, 2024.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Tuesday is Primary Election Day in South Carolina, as voters across the state cast ballots to determine who will be the party representative in November's general election.

Polls open statewide beginning at 7 a.m. and will be open until 7 p.m. Anyone standing in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

Voters will be choosing from partisan candidates in races for the U.S. House, South Carolina House, South Carolina Senate, as well as local races such as for sheriff, coroner, county council, and more.

While technically this is just to choose the Democratic or Republican primary winner, in some cases, people are making their final decision in races. That's because in some contests, no member of the opposite party filed for November's election, meaning whoever wins Tuesday is the winner of that office.

With that in mind, here's what you need to know to prepare for your trip to the polls, according to SC Votes.

Registration:

You must have been registered to vote by May 12, 2024. Check your voter registration status at scvotes.gov

Polling Locations:

Voting:

All early voting and absentee voting has now ended. To vote Tuesday, you must go in person to voting centers.

Polls are open 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. If you are in line at 7 p.m., you will be allowed to vote even if the line is long. Don't forget to bring your Photo ID!

Primary Day is Tuesday, June 11, for both the Democratic and Republican parties. You choose to vote in one, not both.

You must bring one of the following valid photo IDs with you to vote in person:

  • SC Driver's License;
  • SC DMV ID Card;
  • SC Voter Registration Card with photo;
  • Federal ID; or a
  • US Passport.

If you need it, a DMV ID can be obtained at your local Department of Motor Vehicles location, and you can get an SC Voter Registration Card with a photo from your county elections office.

Before you go, take a look at your sample ballot at MyscVOTES, to see who is running in your precinct.
