South Carolina school districts changing plans for Monday due to Helene

Tens of thousands remain without power Sunday, meaning many cannot get a warm meal or shower

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Some local school districts are changing their plans for Monday due to the ongoing problems caused by Tropical Storm Helene's destruction.

Tens of thousands remain without power Sunday, meaning many cannot get a warm meal or shower. Utility officials have said it could take several more days for the lights to come back on. Particularly hard hit areas include Lexington, Newberry, Saluda, and Richland Counties.

Here are the districts that have announced their plans. 

Fairfield County 

Fairfield County School District will have an eLearning Day September 30, 2024. 

Kershaw County

Kershaw County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Monday.

9:30 a.m. - Elementary schools

9:45 a.m. - Middle Schools

10 a.m. - High Schools

Lexington One 

Lexington One is canceling school for all students and employees on Monday, Sept. 30, 2024. All schools and offices will be closed, and all extracurricular activities are canceled.

Lexington Two

Lexington Two is canceling school for all students and employees on Monday, September 30, due to ongoing impacts from Helene. All schools and offices will be closed Monday. All extracurricular activities, sports events, and adult education classes are canceled as well.

Free lunch meals will be available for pickup on Monday between 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Pine Ridge Middle, Cayce Elementary, and Riverbank Elementary. Any youth ages 18 and under can get a free meal, and you do not have to be a student at one of those schools. Questions? Call (803) 739-8381.

Lexington Four 

Lexington Four will be closed tomorrow, Monday, September, 30, 2024. Hazardous road conditions and power outages continue across the district and county. 

Lexington-Richland 5 

As a result, all schools and offices will be closed on Monday, September 30, 2024. The district will utilize February 17, 2025, as a hazardous weather makeup day and will determine at a later time whether that day will be virtual or in-person.

All after school childcare programs, after school activities, and athletic events and practices are also canceled.

Student feeding stations will have bag lunches available for School District Five students for pickup on Monday, September 30, 2024. Pickup will be available at Irmo High School, Dutch Fork High School, and Chapin High School between 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Families should pick up their lunches in the bus loop at their zoned high school. Parents will need to provide a form of identification and their students’ names to receive lunches.

Midlands Tech

All Midlands Technical College campuses will remain closed Monday, Sept. 30.

Newberry School District

The School District of Newberry County will have an eLearning day on Monday, September 30.  Details on assignments and deadlines will come at a later date.    

Richland One 

All Richland One schools and administrative offices will be closed Monday, September 30, 2024.

The district’s Nutrition Services team will distribute meals for students from 9 a.m. to noon Monday. Parents can drive through to pick up meals for their children at the following locations:

  • Carver-Lyon Elementary School – 2100 Waverly Street, Columbia, SC 29204
  • Eau Claire High School – 4800 Monticello Road, Columbia, SC 29203
  • Lower Richland High School – 2615 Lower Richland Boulevard, Hopkins, SC 29061
  • Richland One Central Kitchen – 1224 Whitney Street, Columbia, SC 29201

Richland Two 

concerns, Richland Two will implement an e-learning day tomorrow, Monday, September 30. Instruction will be provided asynchronously (not in real-time). All district after-school activities, events, and programs are canceled. 

Richland Two students are welcome to pick up breakfast and lunch at the following locations:

    •    Bethel Elementary

    •    Pontiac Elementary

    •    Kelly Mill Middle

    •    Killian Elementary

    •    Dent Middle

Our doors are open for:

    •    Breakfast: 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM

    •    Lunch: 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Saluda County 

Saluda didn't address specifically Monday, but in a note to parents and the community,  Superintendent Dr. Harvey Livingston said he did not have a date on when students would return to class.
