South Carolina Soldier Dies in Iraq

24-year-old Spc. Javion Shavonte Sullivan of Fort Mill was taking part in Operation Inherent Resolve, an effort to combat ISIS in Iraq.

Fort Mill, SC (AP, WCNC) - An Army soldier from South Carolina who had been stationed in Texas has been killed in Iraq.

The Pentagon said in a news release that 24-year-old Spc. Javion Shavonte Sullivan of Fort Mill died Monday in a noncombat related incident.

Sullivan leaves behind a young daughter and wife, Rayven Sullivan, who said in a statement:

Jay was so devoted, headstrong and motivated. He kept his friends encouraged. He was a great father, friend, husband and soldier. There are so many words to explain him, and the love he had for what he was doing and the love he had for me and his daughter. He regretted nothing and made the best of everything.

The Defense Department said Sullivan was assigned to the 16th Signal Company, 11th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade at Fort Hood, Texas. He was taking part in Operation Inherent Resolve, an effort to combat ISIS in Iraq.

Sullivan's death is under investigation. No other details were immediately released.
