Suspect arrested in shooting on SC State University campus

The school said the suspect, who is not a student at the school, had been invited by a student to a residence hall.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State University Campus Police say they have arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting early this month.

Officers have arrested 18-year-old Azaurien Ghykes Haigler and have charged him with assault/attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of another crime, and trespassing in an incident that happened just after 7 p.m. on December 1

The school said Haigler, who is not a student at the school, had been invited to Hugine Suites, a campus residence hall, by a student. While there, police he got into an argument with another non-student and fired a shot. The other person in the fight was wounded with what's described as a non life-threatening injury.

When campus police arrived, they say Haigler had already left the scene.

Police said Haigler was already on trespass notice by the school beginning back on November 8 but did not say why he was under that order. Police say he had a 9mm handgun during the incident.

Haigler was held without bond following deferral in a hearing Monday in Orangeburg County Magistrate Court.

SC State Campus police say their investigation continues with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
