KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — Friday was a day full of excitement and smiles for kids at the Champions in Action event for special needs in Kershaw County.
A total of 560 athletics came out to the event to participate in contests ranging from racing to bowling.
"I always get emotional," said Renee Taylor, who's brought her daughter, Kailyn, to the event at for years.
"we've been coming here every year since she was three and I just love it, it's just nice," Taylor said.
The day provides Kailyn and other students to have the day they deserve, to do the things they love most
"Playing games, hanging out with my friends, face painting and tattoos," said Kailyn.
Dr. Ashley Philp, the Director of Special Services at the Kershaw County School District, said students we're cheered on their way to the Special Olympics, leaving her emotional.
"Sheer joy, it really is heartwarming and overwhelming in a positive way to see how much fun they are having," Philip said.
Dr. Philp emphasized the importance of events like these for students with disabilities
"It plays a vital role in supporting the inclusion and empowerment of our students with disabilities, it really is a fantastic opportunity for them to come and participate in community setting working on essential life skills, physical development, social emotional development, along with perseverance and team works and sports man ship," Philp said.
