Springdale Elementary holds parade to honor veterans

The elementary school students greeted veterans with handmade signs and posters and led the parade with flags representing each branch of the military.

SPRINGDALE, S.C. — It is never too early to start learning the meaning of veterans day and students at Springdale Elementary School are doing just that.

Veterans and active military men and woman participated in a Veterans Day parade held on the track of the elementary school.

For U.S. Navy Veteran Carl Kendall, this day looked a little different. Thanks to the Springdale Elementary School parade, he was able to remember his time served alongside his grandchildren.

“It’s a good experience to walk with my grandchildren, and they respect their grandfather. That’s really great," Kendall said.

The elementary school students greeted veterans with handmade signs and posters and led the parade with flags representing each branch of the military.

According to Denise Ward, school executive support and bookkeeper, students have been preparing for the event for weeks, while learning the importance of remembering and thanking those you have served.

“The kids have been so excited because they have been taught the great example that veterans are for us…what they’ve given and what they continue to give for our country," Ward said.

The students walked around the school’s track with parents, grandparents and veterans in the community to honor those who have served and those who are actively serving in the military.

Veterans say they hope their children and grandchildren will grow up in great country, just as they did.

“Freedom is a great thing to have and it's a great thing to fight for and to protect and I'm hoping they see the same thing that we did," Kendall said.
