Springfield Garden Club planting seeds for the community to bloom

Over the past few months, volunteers have been planting flowers like roses, geraniums, and marigolds throughout town.

SPRINGFIELD, S.C. — Spring is in full bloom and the Springfield Garden Club has been hitting the ground running to beautify the town.

“There are people that are so full of gratitude that we’re doing this. Just seeing the flowers, it’s just brought a lot of joy," said Springfield Garden Club president Sheryl Carson.

After a two year pandemic-related hiatus, the organization is on a mission to make the town of Springfield beautiful. Over the past few months, volunteers have been planting flowers like roses, geraniums, and marigolds throughout town.

Soon they plan to sprinkle the town with hundreds of sunflowers.

“These little towns don’t have the money to fund a lot. It’s not like they can say hey I’ll give you $2,000 go buy some rose bushes. We know we have to raise the money or have donations so it’s a constant work in progress," said Carson.

When the group was inactive, Carson says she noticed the town's plant life became neglected. Some of its rose bushes were uprooted, and other flowers died. Now they're replanting.

“People take ownership of the town. They love it," she said.

It's been a community effort. An Orangeburg nursery has even stepped in donating about 200 plants. The group is now raising funds for supplies to continue putting more plants in the ground.
