SC State Fair food truck temperatures are HOT

The weather is cooler this year at the SC State Fair, but is everyone staying cool?

COLUMBIA, South Carolina — The South Carolina State Fair is known for its fun food, but sometimes the weather can make cooking at food trucks a real challenge.

Rose Diaz works for the Burger Bob food truck. She recalls the hottest she has felt while working, “the hottest it got, I think one time it was 125 degrees. Very hot.” Diaz says temperatures inside her truck can sometimes be almost 15-20 degrees warmer.

At the State Fair grounds during lunch time, it was a comfortable 72 degrees, but in the Burger Bob food truck, it was 89.

Blake Reas is another worker at the State Fair this year. He runs the Carasel Foods turkey leg and pork chop stand. His crew takes the necessary precautions to stay comfortable.

Reas says, “we actually go buy fans from the cattle supply people. We’ll set them up in the back of the stand because they move air really well. They’ll knock down the temperature by 25–30 degrees.”

This year’s cooler weather is not only more enjoyable for those working at the State Fair but also for business.

“People eat more whenever the temperatures hang around the mid-60s to the low 70s. When you get up into the 80s and 90s, people don’t eat as much,” says Reas.

Luckily for those working the state fair and those attending, Midland's weather is expected to stay comfortable throughout next week.
