Traffic improvements top of the list at Lexington's "State of the Town" address

Traffic issues on Hwy 378 at Corley Mill road is one of the big traffic topics according to the mayor.

LEXINGTON, S.C. — In a Monday night town council meeting, the Mayor of the Town of Lexington delivered an update on what the town leadership accomplished in 2023, and where they are headed in 2024.

Town of Lexington Mayor, Hazel Livingston, says 2024 will be a big year for traffic improvements, economic growth, and some quality-of-life additions.

In the last year, the town reports seeing 118 net new businesses and says the council worked to make sewer improvements so they could prevent 290,000 gallons of treated sewage from making its way into   14-mile creek.

In her 'State of the Town' address, Mayor Livingston said the Gibson Pond Trail is expected to open this year as well as Virginia Hylton Park, and she said she expects several improvements throughout the year.

“One thing is communication. It's looking at whether we're going to be using more emails, whether we're going to be doing texts, or whether we're going to add an app or just a lot of different things of we can communicate and letting the citizens know what we're doing here in the town...You also have the park, you have the trail at the Old Mill, and we have a Master Trail plan we're working on so hopefully you'll get to see that too," Livingston explained.

The improvements to come also include upgrades to Corley Mill Road and 378. Stuart Ford, the assistant town administrator explains the focus of the upgrades will be the intersection for these two roads.

“That intersection is one of the most traveled in Lexington County, and frankly in the state," Ford stated. "It's a major source of traffic congestion and the goal was to find a solution that works long term. There is a plan for a split, so traffic can move more efficiently, and just reworking the intersection so traffic can get through in the most efficient way."

The town council approved funding for this project on Monday night, but there is no word as to when any work will begin.

The town council will get together again on Monday, March 18 in a work session at the Lexington Municipal Complex on Maiden Lane.
