Parked utility truck rolls down hill, damages Columbia home

A Lake Murray Utility truck crashed into a home in Columbia earlier this morning.

COLUMBIA, S.C. —

Columbia Police said a home was damaged Thursday morning after a vehicle that was supposed to be parked suddenly rolled down the street and into the house.

Around 7 a.m. morning, a Lake Murray Utility truck rolled down a hill and into the home on Steadham Avenue, police said.  A preliminary investigation showed that the brakes on the truck could have failed. The woman that was inside the home was not hurt.

A witness who was in the area at the time of the incident said everything happened quickly.

“I looked up and I see a truck rolling down the hill, and I see one of the workers was trying to open the door, but the truck already ran into the house," the witness said. "And when the truck ran into the house, I was like, Oh my God. Like, I hope no one, like, got hit."

Images from the scene showed a gaping hole left in the home. The woman who was inside the home was not hurt by the truck crashing through the home.

“She was taken to the hospital, but it was, it wasn't anything related to the accident it was a medical issue,” said Captain Michael Blair with the Columbia Police Department.

The Columbia Police Department will investigate to determine if the incident was an accident.

“The officers will canvass the area to see if there's any footage from any ring doorbell cameras or any video cameras in the area to confirm exactly what happened,” Blair said.
