CAMDEN, S.C. — Members of the Camden Planning Commission are putting a proposed development involving more than 700 homes on hold until they can get more information.
In August, social media was abuzz over a possible housing development near Camden.
The social post showed over 700 homes being built in the area. Representatives from Kershaw County and Camden said no plans had been submitted. But months later, that has changed, and the community had a lot to say during a packed public hearing at city hall on Tuesday.
Resident Linda Franklin Moore spoke at the hearing and said a project of this magnitude should not happen.
“None of us are opposed to development, per se, but the number of homes and the taxation on the infrastructure is just too much,” she said.
The design plan submitted to the city shows 790 homes developed in city and county limits. Camden held the hearing on the annexation of the county property and the re-zoning requests for the developments tentatively named The Paddocks at Camden and Wylie Street Townhomes.
At the end of the public hearing, Planning and Zoning voted that the Planning Commission shouldn't further pursue the property's annexation until a formal agreement is available that includes development terms such as timing and phasing.
"This is the biggest thing Camden's ever done, and we want to do it right," said Johnny Deal, chairman of Camden Planning Commission.
