You've likely seen these trees an Camden. Do you know the meaning behind them?

Camden Rotary Club has brought back a tradition to remember fellow members who have passed away.

CAMDEN, S.C. — The Camden Rotary Club has brought back a tradition to remember fellow members who have passed away.

Ed Royall, a well-known attorney in the Camden community and a member of the club passed away in 2022. One of 11 newly planted Crepe Myrtle trees along US-521 was planted in his name.

“The trees are really a living memorial of these Rotarians, many of whom have done so much for the community,” said Rotarian Debbie Elliott.

Elliott said the club is known as a civic service organization, comprised of local businesses owners and community members.

After many years of not installing the trees, Elliott says they decided to bring back the arbor program for the first time since the 1980s in hopes they will brighten up the roadways and keep the memory of those who passed alive.

“They just have a history of not only being really beautiful but also hardy, and you know they have these gorgeous lavender blooms,” Elliott said.

"The widow and three daughters of Ed Royall attended our lunch last Thursday when we dedicated this new memorial arbor program, and I think they were very touched and it gives great comfort to see a Crepe Myrtle alive and thriving."
