CAMDEN, S.C. — From races to bowling and even hula hooping, it was a day full of competing and celebration at the Camden Military Academy.

“It's great just to see the smiles on everyone's faces, the kids just to see the joy,” said parent Chris Thomas.

Thomas is one of hundreds of people who came out with his son, CJ, for the Champions In Action For Special Needs Event hosted by the Camden Military Academy and the Kershaw County School District. It’s the first time they’ve held this event since the pandemic, and it's all in an effort to make sure these kids get the day they deserve.

“They had about 4 to 5 miles of people in the community cheering them on and making them feel special in the way they need, that they need to be felt like the other athletes get to feel, so it’s not just a great day for the families and athletes but also for our whole Kershaw County community as well,” said Camden Military Academy Headmaster Eric Boland.

Boland says the return of the event is magical for the community and families who attend.

"It's great with CJ and seeing all the other kids out here enjoying it and all that and thanks to his school and teachers and everything that's put everything forward to make this happen I mean it is wonderful,” Thomas said.
