Community garden providing access to free healthy food in Cope

The garden is centrally located in town and will grow sweet potatoes, onions, and peppers.

COPE, S.C. — A new community garden is making free healthy food accessible in the town of Cope. The garden at Macedonia AME Church has officially opened to the public this week.

“This will give an opportunity especially for senior citizens to have some vegetables to eat," said Macedonia AME church trustee.

Eddie Rivers is a trustee at the Macedonia AME Church where the garden is located. He says the opening of this garden will help address a major barrier to healthy food access in the community that transportation. Two of the closest grocery stores are in Bamberg and Orangeburg, which is at least 20 minutes either way. This garden is centrally located in the heart of town, making it easier for residents to get to by walking.

Rivers says transportation presents a challenge to the community's senior population.

“We don’t have a transportation system so relatives or friends or church members have to take the elderly back and forth sometimes during the week to buy vegetables or just to shop," said Rivers.

The garden will grow sweet potatoes, peppers, onions, squash, and eggplant. Supplies are donated from Growing COB, an organization serving Calhoun, Orangeburg, and Bamberg Counties. It is also in partnership with the Tri-County Health Network.

“Anytime any fruits or vegetables in need, you’re welcome. No questions asked. You’re welcome," said Rivers.

The community garden is open to the public. It's located at 118 2nd street in Cope.
