NORTH, S.C. — The town of North will vote for a new mayor on November 7th.
Current mayor Julius Jones is not running for re-election on Tuesday.
Residents have the option of choosing between councilwoman Wanda Whetstone and councilman Jeff Washington.
Councilwoman Whetstone says she is running for many reasons such as bringing life back to the town.
“I love this beautiful town of North," said Whetstone. "I’ve been here over twenty years and I just love helping people. I want to make a difference in this town. Our town is drying up so we have to do something to preserve our town, to bring it back to life
Councilman Washington says he is running to continue the work he started when he first joined town council.
“Well I’m running for mayor because I’ve been on the council seat for around twelve years and I’m not completely finished with what I want to do… I know the voters want a grocery store, laundry mat we’ve been wanting this for years and years but I’m not going to give up on it I’m going to still fight for it and I want to get a committee and let them go out and fight for this. We need things around here in North.”
Whetstone says if elected, she wants to question the official county by the government of how many people actually live in the town.
“One of the first things to do is challenge that census because our population is listed as so low," said Whetstone. "We miss lots of funding from the county because we’re too low for certain types of funding so we have to challenge that.”
Washington says residents want town limits expanded and more resources for seniors.
“Some of the citizens want why don’t extent the town limit out more than we got it and its going to take time to do things like that," said Washington. "And some of them want have a senior citizen place to attend and we are going to work on those kinds of problems. We are not going to do things over night, you got to pray on it. Your prayer is going to come.”
Polls will be open from 7am to 7pm on Tuesday for people to cast their ballot.
