ELGIN, S.C. — White boxes are popping up across Elgin, leaving residents confused about what’s going on. Turns out they're cameras.
“We had a lot of misconception on social media that I had to address yesterday," Elgin Police Chief Alan Anders said. "People saying it was radar cameras, they were tracking us, it’s big brother.”
Anders said the department wants residents to know the new cameras installed are to keep them safer.
“We started to put them up all over, wherever we feel, where they need," Anders said.
Five will be in town, one at Potter Community Park, two near the schools, and the rest on roadways. They say it will help their small department of nine officers.
“We get almost 20,000 cars that come through town daily, on a daily basis. These are gonna help us with any kinds of accident investigations. It's, you know, gonna help keep businesses safe and anybody's who's walking around our town or driving on our roads," Corporal Chris Delong said.
Police say four of the cameras are up and running, and a fifth will be online soon.
