Fairfield County unveils new public park for Blackstock Community

The community of Blackstock witnessed the unveiling of their new public park, marking a significant milestone for this tight-knit community

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — Thursday was a day that resonated with the people of Blackstock as the county cut the ribbon for a new community park.

As the ribbon fell, so did tears of joy, marking the beginning of a new chapter in this close-knit community.

"It really makes me tear up," said lifelong resident Carolyn Boulware Salters.

For Salters, it's not just swings and slides; it's a testament to the warmth of a community where neighbors are family.

"It's a very warm community; neighbors are your best friend," she said.

It's more than a playground; it symbolizes roots buried deep in the soil. Carolyn said her memories are intertwined with the very land beneath this vibrant space.

"When I first came out of high school and got my first job, my father asked that my brother and I purchase property, you know? We wanted a new car, but that wasn't what he wanted us to do; he wanted us to buy some land so we could be close here at home," she said. "My father was so involved in the community, and as soon as he found out the county was looking for some property to put a park, he came to me, and he said, if you're not gonna put anything there anytime soon, he said would you consider selling it to Fairfield County."

Peggy Swearingen from Fairfield County Council emphasized the impact of this oasis in a place where sidewalks and parks are a rarity.

"Out here in the country, you don't have sidewalks," she said. "This is wonderful; you've got this - you can stroll your babies; your children can ride their little bicycles with you."

The park still lacks an official name. Councilmember Swearingen said it should carry the legacy of the man who made it all possible—Carolyn's father, John W. Boulware.

"That really touched my heart, it's just heartfelt," Salters said.

Swearingen plans to push for a park name at the next county council meeting.
